Menstrual Hygiene Day: Why It Matters — Globally and Here at Home

May 28 marks Menstrual Hygiene Day, a global movement to break the silence, raise awareness, and change negative social norms around menstrual health. While menstrual hygiene is often talked about as a challenge in developing countries, it’s a serious issue right here in the United States too.
In the U.S., many teens lack access to basic period products or feel too embarrassed to talk about their menstrual health. One study found that nearly 1 in 4 U.S. students have struggled to afford period products — a condition now referred to as “period poverty.” This can lead to missed school days, lowered confidence, and untreated health issues. (Thinx & PERIOD, 2021)
And it’s not just an American issue. According to a 2024 report from UNICEF and WHO, only 39% of schools worldwide provide menstrual health education, and fewer than one-third have appropriate sanitation facilities for menstrual waste disposal. (UNICEF.org)

The Impact on Teens

Teens are especially vulnerable to the effects of poor menstrual hygiene education and access. Without trustworthy information or supportive environments, many experience shame, anxiety, and confusion about their periods. These challenges can lead to missed school, untreated symptoms like severe cramps or irregular cycles, and a general lack of confidence in understanding their own bodies.

At Obria Medical Clinics, we believe that no one should feel ashamed or unsupported when it comes to their period. That’s why we offer:

Menstrual Health Education: Accurate, age-appropriate info to help teens understand what’s normal and when to seek care.
Access to Supplies: We connect teens to free or low-cost menstrual products through our clinics or community partners.
Confidential Support: Whether it’s painful periods, irregular cycles, or just needing someone to talk to, our medical professionals are here to help — with no judgment.
