STDs on the Rise

Know much about STDs? If you’re sexually active, then it’s important to be aware of STDs and the associated risks.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that you be tested yearly if you’re sexually active, or every time you have sexual contact with a new person.

In a recent report, the CDC stated that there were 2.3 million cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis diagnosed in the United States in 2017. That means that there has been a sharp increase in STDs in our country. The report goes on to state the following:

  • Gonorrhea diagnoses increased 67% overall and nearly doubled among men.
  • Syphilis diagnoses increased 76%.
  • Chlamydia remained the most common condition reported to CDC. More than 1.7 million cases were diagnosed in 2017, with 45% among 15- to 24-year-old females.

The CDC went on to say that, “Chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis are curable with antibiotics, but most cases go undiagnosed and untreated — which can lead to severe adverse health effects that include infertility, ectopic pregnancy, stillbirth in infants, and increased HIV risk.”

It’s important to have open and honest conversations with your partner and to get tested regularly. We offer low-cost STD testing and treatment here at Obria. Contact us to learn more or to schedule an appointment.
