Each woman recovers at a different pace. The amount of bleeding varies from woman to woman. It also depends on how far along you were in your pregnancy. You may have cramps that feel like menstrual cramps for a few days to 2 weeks. You may have light vaginal bleeding or spotting for up to 4 weeks. Your normal period will likely return in 4 to 6 weeks. You may have a mix of emotions and thoughts.
Abortion Pill (Medical Abortion) – Expect heavier bleeding for one to two days. Bleeding will typically lessen over two to three weeks. You may need to wear sanitary pads until the bleeding stops. Using pads helps you see clots and gauge blood loss so you can share this information with your provider.
Surgical Abortion (In-Clinic) – You may have cramps and light bleeding for up to 2 weeks after an in-clinic abortion. Most women can return to normal activities 1 to 2 days after the procedure.
Follow-up care is a key part of your treatment. Carefully follow the instructions of your medical healthcare provider. Make sure you do your follow-up appointment(s) if given to you. These exams can determine that your cervix is closed, the abortion was complete, and there is no infection or other complications.
