At just 29 years old, Julia Ondarza had achieved much of what she set out to do. She was a physician assistant working at Stanford, fulfilling a dream she had nurtured since childhood. Focused, ambitious, and passionate about medicine, she envisioned becoming a wife and mother one day—but in the future, on her own terms. Life, however, had other plans.
Julia’s journey through an unplanned pregnancy is a story of fear, uncertainty, and ultimately, hope. It’s one of many stories we hear at Obria and our affiliated clinics—where women come not just for answers, but for compassion and support. Julia shares her story in her own words in our YouTube video, and what follows is a reflection of that experience from our perspective.
A Career on Pause—and an Unexpected Test Result
After working for a year and a half in an ICU during the COVID-19 pandemic, Julia made the difficult decision to step away for a time to recover emotionally and physically. She was between jobs, between insurance, and emotionally spent when she learned she was pregnant. Her initial reaction was disbelief and panic.
“This isn’t how it was supposed to happen,” she thought. With no job, no health insurance, and no plan for motherhood at that moment, Julia kept her pregnancy to herself. She feared judgment, being seen as irresponsible—or worse, ungrateful for the life she had worked hard to build.
She began searching online for help. Specifically, she was looking for affordable, professional care—someone who could confirm the viability of her pregnancy and help her understand her options. That’s when she found RealOptions (Obria Northern California), one of Obria’s trusted affiliate clinics.
A Safe Place to Land
Julia described the moment she walked into RealOptions as one of total vulnerability. She was overwhelmed, crying, and afraid. But what she found at the clinic surprised her: not pressure, not judgment—just support.
One of our team members, Rosie, was the first person Julia confided in about her pregnancy. Rosie didn’t push her to make a decision. She simply listened, offered kindness, and helped guide Julia through the next steps. Julia was scheduled quickly for an ultrasound—something she now describes as critically important in helping her begin to process what was happening.
At her first appointment, the pregnancy was still very early—around 4 to 6 weeks—so they scheduled her to return two weeks later. In the meantime, she confided in her partner, and the two of them began the emotional journey of weighing their options. Julia was conflicted. Each day brought a new wave of emotions and uncertainty. Still, she returned for that second ultrasound.
A Heartbeat—and a Turning Point
During that second visit, everything changed. The same ultrasound technician placed the probe gently on her abdomen, and instantly—there it was. A heartbeat.
Seeing the flicker of life on the screen overwhelmed Julia with emotion. And then came the words that stuck with her, perhaps more than anything else:
“The baby is safe. They have everything they need. You focus on yourself.”
In that moment, something shifted. Those words gave Julia permission to breathe. Permission to pause. Permission to ask: What do I need to make this work? And with that clarity, she began to imagine a different future—one where she could move forward with the pregnancy and still care for herself.
From Fear to Empowerment
Over the next weeks, Julia’s relationship with RealOptions deepened. The support she received helped lift the weight she had been carrying in silence. Slowly, she began to feel empowered. She could do this. She wasn’t alone.
On August 8, 2022, Julia gave birth to Noah James, a healthy baby boy weighing 8 pounds, 9 ounces. When she later looked up the meaning of his name, she discovered that Noah means “rest.” It was a perfect match.
At a time when her life had been consumed by stress, burnout, and pressure, Noah brought peace. He reminded Julia to slow down and be present. To breathe. To rest.
A Grateful Return
After Noah’s birth, Julia called RealOptions with a simple message: “I want to come back. I want to give you hugs. I want to say thank you.” For our team, it was a powerful reminder of why we do what we do.
Julia’s story is not just about an unplanned pregnancy—it’s about the power of compassionate care and nonjudgmental support. It’s about giving women the space to make thoughtful decisions and helping them see what’s possible, even when the path is unexpected.
“I could not imagine my life without Noah James,” Julia says in the video. “And I’m so happy to be his mom.”
