(3) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Routine ultrasound<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">images<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are typically black and white. They are usually somewhat fuzzy but are detailed enough to show us what we need to know about <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fetal growth<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For this reason, it may not be easy for you to identify exactly what you are seeing on the screen. We\u2019ll help you understand what we\u2019re seeing and what it means. We will also give you the option of keeping a few printed images from the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a few things you will notice when you look at the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ultrasound screen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You will see a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">white image<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of your baby and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">umbilical cord<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, against a dark background. Your doctor will learn a lot of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">important information<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">developing baby<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by observing these images.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, a 7-week old baby is just the size of a blueberry, but already has developed limb buds, outer ears, and nearly complete eyelids. At this stage, your baby also has an increased heart rate since the last week and cells that are developing muscles and a spinal column. (4) To prepare for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">transabdominal<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ultrasounds<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we ask you to drink a few <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glasses of water <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a couple of hours before the procedure. This is because a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">full bladder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> helps the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high frequency sound waves<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> move more easily, to help provide a clear picture. (6)<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a painless procedure and it usually takes about 20 minutes. To begin, we will ask you to lay on your back on an examining table. Next, we will apply a gel to your abdomen and move a scanner over it. These are usually done for the early stages of pregnancy, or when the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">images<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">transabdominal<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ultrasound<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are not quite clear enough. We do not provide this type of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ultrasound<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but it may be helpful to know about it because it is common.<\/span><\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For this procedure, your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health care provider<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will likely ask you to change into a gown and undress from the waist down. Next, you will lie down on an examining table and place your feet in stirrups.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For this process, your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health care provider<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will use a small, slender scanner. The scanner is shaped like a wand. It is covered with a plastic sheath and lubricated before being placed into your vagina. However, there is a lot of useful information we can learn together from your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pregnancy ultrasound<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will also be helpful for you to know about a few things that an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">early ultrasound<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cannot determine. <strong>First, it cannot determine your <\/strong><\/span><strong>baby\u2019s sex<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>.<\/strong> This is because <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">early ultrasounds<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are done in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first trimester<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and a baby\u2019s gender can only be determined after the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">second trimester<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, after 18 to 21 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weeks of pregnancy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. (3)\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><strong>Second, ultrasounds in the first six to eight weeks of pregnancy are not going to look for <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>down syndrome.<\/strong> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doctors don\u2019t perform a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nuchal translucency <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ultrasound for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">down syndrome <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">until 14\u201320 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weeks gestation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and then only if a past <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">screening test <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">showed a problem.
